At the beginning of the semester I shared some paintings that my mother had made during the “Artists Inspiration” presentation, One of them was Maria Moñitos, who is a public figure that has been used not only in the Dominican Republic but through out Latin America. Often artists bring the character to life by representing it in paintings, cartoons, or live-action shows.
Here are some examples of Maria Moñitos:

With this is mind, I figure out what is the next step for the bust I am building…
While I am enjoying building this sculpture and the challenges that come with it, I still have some unanswered questions, What is it? Why am I making it? and I didn’t really have an answer for those, I just wanted to sculpt the human figure and have fun.
But then it clicked, I have been wanting to tie my work to my roots, to my experiences and the places I have been, and there is nothing more Dominican than platano verde and Maria Moñitos. So, there. The image above is a sketch of what my Maria Moñitos will look like. 🙂
The End.
