Blog #3

hi…

Let’s act like I am not late and you are not disappointed ☹️

Last week, I mentioned having found a really cool artist on IG, not a big deal, just Roberto Lugo lol. I felt very moved by his work and history; I felt represented and understood. He talks about how finding ancient art books in the library was his biggest inspiration. He saw Greek pots with images and stories, and how their culture and history had been preserved through time. That became fuel for him; he also wanted to tell his story and his community’s in an everlasting canvas.

I watched his NCECA talk and was just wowed. I really admire the way he ties poetry into his talks, but even more into his work. His vessels and the imagery on them carry the same depth that his words do.

I strive for that! I want my family heritage to be forever framed, for people to connect with it and see their own history reflected within it. I guess that’s my “why.” Sharing and cherishing my family’s perseverance matters so much to me because understanding their past has helped me empathize with our present and make peace with many bottled-up feelings, and maybe it can also bring some sort of healing to another immigrant kid who is going through a similar situation.

I will expand on my “Why?” in the next blog.
